SA Football in Mourning: Bafana Star Jayden Adams Dies at 25

South African football is reeling after the sudden death of Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Jayden Adams at just 25 years old.

Adams, who featured in all three of South Africa’s group matches at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, was found dead at a house in Schotschekloof, a suburb in central Cape Town, on Saturday morning. Police have opened an investigation, but the cause of death has not yet been confirmed.

The news was confirmed by the player’s representatives and his mentor, Brendine Johnson, who spoke on behalf of the grieving family.

“At this moment, things are still raw,” Johnson said. “This passing has ripped everybody apart. Returning from the World Cup just now, and then getting such news… I had a close conversation with him on Thursday. The guy was really positive about returning after the World Cup and going forward.”

Adams had every reason to be optimistic. He had just helped Sundowns win the CAF Champions League and was part of the Bafana Bafana squad that made history by reaching the knockout stages of a World Cup for the first time. He started in the 1-1 draw against the Czech Republic – playing just hours after learning his grandmother had passed away.

South Africa’s Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, expressed his shock: “South African football has lost one of its brightest young talents, and our nation mourns alongside his family, his teammates and the millions of supporters who watched him grow.”

Adams rose through the ranks at Stellenbosch FC before joining Mamelodi Sundowns in January 2025, where he won league and continental titles. He made nine appearances for Bafana Bafana in total, scoring once, and was part of the squad that reached the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations semi-finals.

Tributes have poured in from across the football fraternity. The South African Football Players Union said they were “devastated by the untimely passing” of a player who “carried the hopes of the nation with pride, courage and distinction.”

Mamelodi Sundowns have requested that the family’s privacy be respected during this difficult time, while authorities are expected to release further details in due course.
